Beach kayakers spark Coastguard mudflats scare at Brean

-

Burnham Coastguards and a rescue hovercraft were called to Brean beach on Sunday afternoon (October 25th) following concern for two kayakers seen almost half a mile out on the mudflats.

Beach warden Dave Furber raised the alarm at 1.55pm after spotting the pair, from Bristol, wading through knee-deep mud on a falling tide to reach the sea.

The Spirit Of Lelaina hovercraft, operated by BARB, was called to the scene by Coastguards to check on the pair’s safety.

BARB Deputy Operations Manager Graham Hallsworth told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It was their first kayaking trip to Brean and they didn’t know about the potentially dangerous nature of the mudflats and fast-flowing tides. We were happy to check on their safety and escort them back to the beach.”
