150-name petition demands action at Highbridge’s King Alfred Sports Centre

-

More than 150 disgruntled members of Highbridge’s King Alfred Sports Centre have signed a petition calling for discussions to take place on why a popular bar was removed from the building without notice earlier this year.

The page-long petition calls on Somerset County Council to open discussions with the centre’s members on why the bar facilities could not be continued.

Highbridge's King Alfred Sports Centre Burnham-On-Sea County Councillor Mike Facey told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Many of the members and I are not happy with the situation. There seems to have been a complete lack of communication between management and the centre’s members.”

However, Jan Hooking, a spokesperson for Somerset County Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Consultation was carried out with users of the centre. Unfortunately the bar was operating at an overall loss.”

“However, we will be carrying out a feasibility study with a view to the possibility of moving it to a different location and a different set-up.”

“There has been a recent investment of £100,000 in fitness equipment and reception facilities at the centre, which demonstrates that Somerset County Council is actively developing the site for its core purpose of promoting sport and physical activity.”
