Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards were called to help a kitesurfer who was spotted struggling in the sea after losing his surf board on Sunday afternoon (October 23rd).

Coastguards were called to Burnham beach at 2.55pm after an angler dialled 999 to report the surfer was in difficulty in heavy winds.

Burnham Coastguard Officer Ian Jefferies told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A beach fisherman reported the kite surfer had lost his surfboard and was relying on his kite as a buoyancy aid.”

“He was struggling in the water and strong winds, but managed to get back to the shore on his own accord just before we arrived.”

“He was unhurt, but his surfboard had been swept away by the tide.”

Mr Jefferies added: “The fisherman did the right thing in alerting Coastguards as soon as there was any concern for his welfare.”

Burnham’s lifeboat was also paged but was stood down before launching.
