Liam – who became BMX world champion in July – was shown in the audience and given a mention during Sunday’s live show on BBC1.

He tweeted afterwards: “Never thought BMX or I would get any recognition at tonight’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards. So humbled! Amazing for the sport.”

Liam – who helped to switch on Burnham’s Christmas lights last month – has been an active member of Burnham BMX Club since the age of four and represented Great Britain at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics. He is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School.
