Both Burnham-On-Sea lifeboats were called into action on Wednesday after a windsurfer was reported to be in difficulties.

Both RNLI lifeboats were ready to launch next to the town’s jetty soon after mid-day however the crews were stood down minutes later by Milford Haven Coastguard, after the windsurfer had self-recovered on the beach towards Berrow.

The Staines Whitfield, Burnham’s Atlantic 75 lifeboat, had just launched before it was stood down and helmsman Nick Prout used the time to test a newly-replaced engine.

The operation occurred during heavy rain and both boats were returned to the station for preparation for the next launch.

Helmsman Nick Prout said: “The sea was moderate, with no more than two foot of swell. We were there if needed. It is better to call us out early than risk loss of life by not calling at all.”
