Burnham-On-Sea lifeboats launched amid concern for kite surfers

-

Both Burnham-On-Sea’s lifeboats were launched on Friday evening (December 4th) amid concern for the safety of two kite surfers.

A member of the public had called the Coastguard to voice concerns for the safety of two kite surfers, operating near Brean Down. Coastguards requested the lifeboats’ help and both were launched shortly after 4.15pm.

The two RNLI lifeboats were immediately launched and proceeded to the area in prevailing South-Westerly force 3 winds and a moderate sea state.

Crews from both boats carried out a full shoreline search around Brean Down and Weston bay with no result.

Eventually, it transpired that the kite-surfers’ vehicles had left the area and the search was stood down, and both boats returned to Burnham for recovery and wash-down by boat and shore team volunteers shortly after 6pm.

A Coastguard spokesman said the the incident had been a false alarm with good intent, adding: “As always, if you see someone in difficulty dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. It is better to be safe than sorry.”
