Call for speeding crackdown along Love Lane in Burnham-On-Sea

Town councillors are calling for a clampdown on speeding along a popular Burnham-On-Sea commuter route.

Ever increasing traffic speeds between the town’s Tesco roundabout and Burnham hospital are making Love Lane so dangerous that it is just time before an accident occurs, they say.

Speaking at the latest town council meeting, several members called on Somerset County Council to enforce the 30mph speed limit along the road and consider other methods to ensure the law is not broken.

Cllr David Poole said the speed of traffic along Love Lane has been “absolutely horrendous” during recent weeks.

“Time and time again we’ve taken this back to the County Council but have not got any action,” he said. “Before long something terrible will happen.”

Former town Mayor Cllr Louise Parkin added her backing to the calls for change, saying she “wholeheartedly agrees” with Cllr Poole.

“We’ve been talking about Love Lane for 5-6 years. There is nothing we can do but write letters to the County Council.”

And Planning Committee Chairman Peter Clayton asked: “How many have to die before we get this road onto the priority list?”

The council has pledged to take up the issue with the County Council once again to push for action.
