M5 re-opens between Burnham and Bridgwater after closure for power line works

-

An electrical fault forced the closure of the M5 motorway between Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater on Friday (September 4th).

The M5 was shut in both directions between Junction 22 at Burnham and Junction 23 at Bridgwater to allow National Grid to deal with the issue on an overhead line.

The motorway re-opened at 4.15pm but with long delays in the area.

The nearby A38 was allocated as the main diversion route, making it extra busy.

The M5 was also closed in June in the same area due to the risk of overhead electricity cables falling onto the road.

A National Grid Electricity Distribution spokesperson said its engineers had carried out an “urgent inspection” and had closed the road to allow the work to be carried out safely.

“Where possible, repairs were completed at the same time,” they added.

“We are sorry for the disruption caused and thank motorists for their patience.”
