A mystery object has been washed up on Burnham-On-Sea beach, prompting a call-out for the town’s BARB Search & Rescue.

A team of volunteers was called out to investigate the 6ft long cylinder-shaped object, pictured here, which was washed up on the sand near the low lighthouse.

A member of the public called in at Burnham’s seafront hovercraft station to report they had found the object while walking along the beach.

A spokesman said: “BARB contacted the regional Coastguard Control Centre to report it and seek advice. We were then requested to investigate it and report backl on the exact location.”

“After confirming that it posed no risk, it was moved up the beach for the council’s beach cleaning team to remove.”

“No further action was required and it’s believed it may be a commercial mouring buoy.”

“It’s always our advice to report unusual items like this along the coastline to the Coastguard on 999 to get it checked out rather than ignoring it and risking a beach user being hurt.”
