New Burnham-On-Sea Community Garden launched with tree planting ceremony

-

Work to create a new community garden in Burnham-On-Sea formally started on Saturday (May 9th) with a tree planting ceremony at Crosses Pen, the green space beside the Manor Gardens.

Volunteers from the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Green Team Charitable Incorporated Organisation were joined by Somerset Council Leader Bill Revans to officially launch the project, which we first featured here in April.

Over 20 volunteers have signed up to help bring the new garden to life – and many were present at Satuday’s opening ceremony, pictured here.

The new space intends to offer a welcoming place where residents can come together to enjoy gardening as well as a peaceful retreat for those seeking somewhere quiet to relax.

The new garden is being managed by the community and is set to include raised beds, benches, fruit trees, hedges, water butts, a compost heap and a small shed. Regular working days are planned throughout May as volunteers begin shaping the site.

Lesley Millard, one of the team, thanked sponsors and supporters fro their help, including Sanders Garden Centre at Brent Knoll, plus Trudie for raised beds, Clive for compost bins, Tony and  Bev for manure, and Somerset Council for the approval to use the ground.

Somerset Council Leader Bill Revans thanked all those who are supporting the garden, and added that it a great example of the community working together.

The Green Team, a volunteer-led charity, works to encourage community efforts to protect nature, reduce waste and respond to climate change. Anyone interested in taking part or supporting the project can email bandhgreenteam@gmail.com.
