New £36,000 lift boosts accessibility at Burnham-On-Sea’s BASC sports clubhouse

-

A £36,000 project to introduce a new accessibility lift in the clubhouse at Burnham Association of Sports Clubs (BASC) was completed with an official opening ceremony on Saturday (March 30th).

A ribbon-cutting took place by the Mayor of Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge, Cllr Bill Hancock, Mayoress Frances Hancock, and Cllr Mike Cresswell, Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council.

Representatives from Viridor and the Big Lottery, which also helped fund the project alongside the two local councils, attended the event at the club.

Russ Pike, BASC Chairman, said the £36,178 project makes the facilities the “most accessible and best-equipped in the area.”

He thanked those organisations who had helped to fund the project and explained that this means the rent prices for the clubs and groups will not have to increase.

“Our huge thanks also go to Neil McKen who did so much work on the project, and to Andy Marsh the builder for all his work, and Ability Lifts for installing and supplying it.

Neil McKen, project manager for BASC, added: “The BASC was originally built in 1975 with the changing rooms at ground floor level and the main clubhouse bar at first floor level. The only means of access to the first floor facility was by way of an internal or external staircase.”
