A fundraising charity ball in Burnham-On-Sea has raised an impressive total of £3,349 to help local teenager Caleb Bingham buy a new electric wheelchair as he battles a rare neuromuscular disease.
The event at Burnham-On-Sea’s Ritz Social Club raised funds to enable Caleb to maintain his independence as he lives with Friedreich’s Ataxia that affects balance, coordination, speech and mobility.
Caleb’s story has touched many across the community. As a baby he fought meningitis, and as he grew older he was diagnosed with autism and several other conditions.
More recently came the devastating news that he has Friedreich’s Ataxia, a progressive inherited disease caused by the body not producing enough of a vital protein called frataxin. Without it, nerve and heart cells slowly deteriorate, leading to increasing difficulties with walking, speaking, swallowing and fine motor skills.
Leanne Smith, the ball’s organiser and a close family friend, says: “Caleb has ordered his electric wheelchair and booked a skydive with the money raised from the Ball.”
“He will now be able to join his family on outings and have so much more independence, thanks to the generosity of those that donated. I am so grateful also to those that helped me organise the event!”
She adds that the funds will enable Caleb and his family to make “meaningful memories” together. The family have issued a “heartfelt thank you” to Leanne and all who supporrted the fundraising.
The event was well supported by locals, including Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Cllr Mike Facey, and featured live music from popular local band The Rubix Dudes, along with a buffet, raffle and auction.
