Poppy art display unveiled in Highbridge gardens for remembrance week

-

A colourful Poppy-themed display has been unveiled at Highbridge’s Southwell Gardens this week to mark the annual remembrance.

Sharon Reid from Highbridge War Memorial Trust says: “The original Committee/Trustees always had a service on November 11th within the gardens which unfortunately the new Committee/Trustees have been unable to continue.”

“It was decided that we would try and do a poppy display instead within the sunken gardens. We put put a shout-out on social media to all those who could knit and crochet, asking for anyone willing to make some to help us.”

“On 1st November all the poppies were dropped off at 3 local businesses — Kerrys Cards, Trevs Local and Baby Bee Crafty. The poppies came at a truly unexpected rate.”

“We have been surprised at poppies not just coming in from Highbridge and Burnham but all over, including Mark, Wells, Shepton Mallet and Pilton.”

“After seven hours’ work to get the poppies placed onto the net a lot of climbing by both myself and Louise Jones, we put them put up on Sunday for all to enjoy.”

“The committee and trustees would like to thank all those who have been involved with this display in turning our sunken gardens into a fantastic display in respect of all those who are represented here and their comrades during unthinkable time.”
