Fooled? Proposal unveiled to convert Burnham’s low lighthouse into boutique holiday let

-

Our story below was an April Fool’s Day story!

Burnham-On-Sea’s famous low lighthouse could soon be welcoming overnight guests, after the council announced plans for new tourism accommodation.

Under the proposal, the nine‑legged wooden structure on the beach could be converted into a “boutique micro‑holiday let”, offering visitors the chance to spend a night inside one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks.

The plan would see the lighthouse being fitted with a compact sleeping platform, a fold‑down table, a reading lamp, and what officials describe as “a modest but charming window with uninterrupted views of the Bristol Channel, sand, and the occasional seagull.”

A council spokesperson adds: “Burnham’s low lighthouse is iconic. This trial would allow visitors to experience it in a completely new way — provided they don’t mind climbing a ladder and listening to the tide and sea breezes.”

Locals have reacted with amusement, with one café owner saying it could become “Burnham’s smallest hotel room — perfect for anyone who enjoys glamping but wishes it were slightly wobblier.”

Lifeguards have been consulted and confirmed that guests would be escorted to and from the lighthouse at safe tide times.

Residents will be invited to give feedback later this month and bookings could open later this year when the changes are implemented.
