Road safety action day to be held at M5 services near Burnham-On-Sea

-

Road safety organisations are teaming up to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding for an action day at the M5 Sedgemoor Services near Burnham-On-Sea.

The event is being held this Friday, 15th July, by the Safer Somerset Partnership, made up of representatives from Somerset County Council’s Somerset Road Safety team, Avon and Somerset Police, Southwestern Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Highways England.

The groups will be gathering at Sedgemoor Services on the M5 Southbound to provide driver education and highlight the four most common causes of casualties on the roads: speed, drink/drugs, mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts – which are otherwise known as the ‘fatal four’.

They will also be offering advice and tips on all aspects of road safety, from tyre maintenance to motorcycle safety.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “I’m always shocked by the statistic that speeding is a factor in a third of all crashes. That to me is a clear message that we can all take simple steps – such as slowing down – to improve road safety for ourselves and others.”

“My thanks go to all the agencies who are taking part in this action day and I hope the event is a real success in reinforcing the message that we’re all responsible for our own actions when behind the wheel.”
