Burnham‑On‑Sea MP Ashley Fox has completed his second annual Summer Village Tour, spending four days visiting twelve villages to hear directly from residents about the issues affecting communities across Bridgwater, Burnham‑On‑Sea and the surrounding area.
The tour, which Mr Fox says is one of the most valuable parts of his year, gave residents the chance to raise both local and national concerns.
Although each village had its own challenges, several clear themes emerged repeatedly throughout the visits.
The condition of Somerset’s rural roads was the most common issue raised. Residents spoke about potholes, deteriorating surfaces and a lack of routine maintenance, with many saying rural roads are simply not being cared for to the standard they expect.
Problems with Royal Mail services were also mentioned in almost every village. People reported delayed and missed deliveries, expressing frustration that they could no longer rely on receiving post consistently.
Access to healthcare was another recurring concern, particularly the difficulty of finding an NHS dentist. Many residents also raised wider issues around access to local healthcare services and the need for improved provision.
Crime and anti‑social behaviour, especially in town centres, featured prominently. Residents spoke about the impact of shoplifting, anti‑social behaviour and the need for a stronger visible police presence to help keep communities safe.
Ashley Fox said the tour had once again highlighted how important it is to spend dedicated time listening to residents across rural communities.
“Though every village has its own challenges, it was striking how often the same issues came up, particularly the poor condition of our rural roads,” he said. “The issues raised with me will continue to be a key focus of my work both locally and in Parliament.”
He added that he will continue raising these concerns with the Government, Somerset Council, Royal Mail, the NHS and other organisations on behalf of residents across the constituency.
