Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club raises £600 for Philippines quake victims

-

Hundreds of pounds has been raised for victims of the recent earthquake in the Philippines by Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club members.

Several Rotarians – including Graham Lyne and Ashley Edwards pictured here – spent the New Year weekend collecting at Sanders Garden World, where they raised £600 towards the victims’ shelter and clean drinking water.

Burnham-On-Sea Rotary spokesman George Moon told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Rotary Clubs throughout the south west have created shelter boxes and water-survival boxes to meet the needs of people suddenly left homeless and without drinkable water in the wake of natural or man-made catastrophes.”

“Shelter boxes provide a tent and sleeping bags for ten people, along with basic cooking utensils and a stove, and a supply of water purification tablets to last a month. As money is raised, boxes are prepared and kept in a warehouse against future emergencies, but the recent disaster has exhausted stocks and more are needed.”

“Because a supply of safe drinking water is often the greatest single need after a disaster, a new Water-Survival Box has been developed to provide enough clean water to sustain four people for four months, plus other survival equipment. It can be used where shelter is available, or in conjunction with the Shelter Box.”

Examples of both Boxes were on display at Sanders and Burnham Rotary Club President Mike Young added: “We are pleased with the result and grateful for the support of Sanders Garden World. This was the first time we had the new Water-Survival Box on display and it attracted quite a bit of interest.”
