Almost 15 car parking spaces along Burnham-On-Sea’s North Esplanade have been temporarily removed for a month to make way for coach waiting bays while upgrade work gets underway at the Pier Street Car Park.
Somerset Council has this week said it has removed the seafront spaces opposite Marine Cove for a month to accommodate buses and coaches that would normally use designated bays inside the car park.
A spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com the temporary measures are necessary while new height barriers are set to be installed at the Pier Street car park.

“The bay on The Esplanade has been suspended for buses / coaches to wait while Pier Street car park is being redeveloped. Previously there were bays within the car park for buses/coaches, but due to ongoing works to implement new height barriers, we’ve had to provide temporary facilities for them to wait elsewhere.”
“A long term solution has been identified, and will be implemented once the redevelopment works have concluded.”
The temporary parking suspension on the North Esplanade began at midnight on Thursday April 30th and will remain in place until 11.59pm on Sunday May 31st, with normal parking then scheduled to resume once the works conclude.
Several nearby residents are unhappy that the spaces have been suspended and have not yet been used by coaches, while putting more strain on the limited number of on-street parking spaces in the surrounding area.
The height restriction barriers in the Pier Street car park aim to deter unauthorised encampments of vehicles through the year.
