Ship runs aground on Burnham-On-Sea Beach

A ship ran aground on Burnham-On-Sea Beach overnight on Friday (November 12th).

The 50ft barge was deliberately beached by its pilot on a patch of sand near the south side of the jetty after suffering an engine failure.

It remained on the sand overnight until the early hours of Saturday morning when the mechanical problem had been fixed and the high tide gave it buoyancy, enabling it to continue on its way to Bridgwater.

The barge was conducting a survey in the River Parrett near the Express Business Park. There was no risk to life during the incident and neither Burnham’s lifeboat nor the hovercraft had been required.

The submitted photo here shows the ship on Burnham Beach.
