A new environmental policy is set to be introduced at Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge Town Council as part of a wide reaching ‘green’ plan for the area.
The council has this week unanimously agreed to ban the use of sky lanterns on its properties, which include local cemeteries – and it hopes that Sedgemoor District Council will follow suit.
It comes amid concern about the environment impact arising from the use of sky lanterns, which can affect animals and wildlife.
Cllr Mike Facey said at this week’s meeting: “Sky lanterns are a menace – our Mayor Bill Hancock, who is a farmer, has suffered continuously from their use. Several of his livestock have suffocated and suffered injuries from them.”
Cllr Andy Brewer added: “The policy on sky lanterns will be just one part of our planned new environmental policy covering many topics, including plastics usage.”
