The first ever Somerset Day took place on Monday (May 11th) to celebrate the county.
The 11th May was chosen by the public vote to commemorate the efforts of King Alfred the Great in 878 against the Danes.
The distinctive yellow Somerset Flag was flown at the town flag pole by Burnham and Highbridge Town Council.
And Sedgemoor District Council also raised a flag in King Square, Bridgwater, pictured right, led by Council Chairman Peter Downing and representatives of the Royal British Legion.
Passion for Somerset, a group of local businesses, ran an online public vote earlier this year to find a date for the county-wide event.
There were three days in the running, each with a special link to the county. The winning date took 51% of the votes.
John Turner, from Passion for Somerset, said the county was the third largest county in England. “Somerset needs some identity,” he added. “Actually having a day for Somerset, like many of our county counterparts have, will really start to get the message out that Somerset has something really, really special.”
