Somerset Levels to feature in new Channel 5 birdwatching series

-

The Somerset Levels will take centre stage later this month when actor Sam West and comedian Ade Edmondson visit the county for a new Channel 5 nature series, Sam & Ade Go Birdwatching.

Episode three of the series, filmed in Somerset in January, follows seasoned birdwatcher Sam West as he introduces his long‑time friend Edmondson to the joys of twitching.

The pair explore some of the area’s most celebrated wildlife spots, including the RSPB reserve at Ham Wall and the Shapwick Heath National Nature Reserve.

The episode airs on Channel 5 at 8pm on Tuesday 28th April.

During their visit, they set out in search of one of Britain’s most elusive birds — the Bittern, famous for its deep, booming call.

Along the way, they encounter a wide range of birdlife, including the spectacular starling murmurations that draw visitors to the Levels each winter.

The series, fronted by RSPB ambassador West, blends birdwatching with gentle conversation as the friends spend time in peaceful landscapes that encourage reflection.

Each episode highlights how nature can offer a welcome escape from busy, stressful lives — whether through spotting rare species or simply enjoying quiet moments together.

Viewers inspired by the programme are encouraged to follow in the duo’s footsteps. RSPB Ham Wall is one of the best places in the UK to see Bitterns, whose numbers have been recovering in recent years.

Spring is an ideal time to visit the wetland reserve, where Hobbies, egrets, Kingfishers and other species thrive among the reedbeds, all set against the backdrop of Glastonbury Tor.

Local wildlife groups say the programme is a timely reminder of the natural treasures on our doorstep — and the joy that comes from slowing down and taking a closer look.
