Roadside speed camera torched near Burnham-On-Sea

-

A disgruntled motorist is thought to be behind a blaze which destroyed this roadside speed camera near Burnham-On-Sea early this morning (Monday, December 7th).

Fire crews were called to Rooksbridge at 5am to put out the blaze, which appeared to have been started deliberately by placing a burning tyre at the base of the structure.

Fire spokesman Paul Slavin told Burnham-On-Sea.com one fire engine had been called to the scene.

He added: “The camera was well alight when our crew arrived shortly after 5am to extinguish the fire.”

Police spokesman Simon Whitby told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I can confirm that we dealt with a report of a burnt-out camera at Rooksbridge today. The matter is now in the hands of the Safety Camera Partnership, who oversee speed cameras.”

The same camera has been torched several times in recent years. Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
