Burnham-On-Sea’s MP gives his backing to local speedway side

-

Burnham-On-Sea’s MP has given his backing to local speedway side Somerset Rebels during an event to promote the sport.

MP James Heappey, plus the Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Ian Dyer and Burnham’s Deputy Mayor Paul Young were among the guests at the event held at the Oaktree Arena.

Organiser Tom Ashton, Chairman of community group BIARS which runs Burnham’s tourist information centre, said: “Speedway brings large numbers of people into the Burnham area each time there is a fixture here and this event was organised to promote the partnership between the sport and local tourism.”

“We want speedway to grow here. The Somerset Rebels are doing really well and the Hanock family have done a great job in bringing people here and building the fan base. It’s great to have the support of our MP, councils and businesses.”

Mr Heappey said he is a “great admirer” of the Rebels and the positive impact the side has on the Burnham-On-Sea area.

Friday’s event was held at the same time as a Premier League fixture against Ipswich Witches, which the Rebels won 61-31.
