Over £2,000 is expected to have been raised for local charities after dozens of people from across the Burnham-On-Sea area took part in a sponsored swim in Brean on Sunday (February 5th).

The sixth annual Swimarathon, run by Burnham-On-Sea Rotary Club, saw several local teams swimming lengths of the Brean Splash pool.

The teams’ final sponsorship tally has not yet been calculated but is expected to be around £2,000.

Among those taking part were Burnham’s Zone Youth Club, Brent Knoll School, Sensational Kids, Brean Splash and Burnham’s Abbeyfield.

The ladies of Burnham’s Inner Wheel also made a splash for local charities by taking part in Sunday’s event at Brean Splash.

Swimmers for Burnham-On-Sea based charity Sensational Kids, below, also took part in Sunday’s Swimarathon.

This year’s Swimarathon was dedicated to the late Jim Tancock, Past President of the Club who created the event, and who sadly passed away last year. A plaque was unveiled in Jim’s memory, pictured below, and his wife Janet said she was “deeply touched” by the memorial.

Mark Newbery, President of Burnham Rotary Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “It’s been another very successful Swimarathon. The Club is grateful to the owners and staff of Brean Splash for their hospitality and facilities, and to all who supported it and took part.”

The children from Burnham’s Zone Youth Club, pictured above, swam a total of 226 lengths in 40 minutes and raised a fantastic £140 towards funding their club. The event was sponsored by Acorn Solicitors who paid the team’s entry fee.
