Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge shoppers are being encouraged to support local families facing financial difficulties during the Easter school holidays by purchasing a pre‑packed donation bag at Tesco.
The bags, costing between £2 and £5, contain a selection of healthy long‑life food items. They will be available at the Burnham-On-Sea Tesco superstore throughout the Easter break, from 30th March to 12th April, making it easier for customers to donate the most‑needed items.
The Easter Holiday Helps initiative forms part of Tesco’s year‑round support for schoolchildren and families. This includes the supermarket’s Fruit and Veg for Schools programme, which provides grants to schools with high numbers of pupils receiving free school meals, helping them offer healthier snacks and lunch options.
Locally, proceeds from the donation bags will go directly to the Highbridge Area Foodbank. Volunteers will be packing bags with essential items, collecting donations from the store, and transporting them to the Methodist Church in Burnham for sorting and distribution to families referred for emergency food support.
A foodbank spokesperson said they remain “very grateful for the support our foodbank receives from the local community.”
Claire De Silva, Head of Communities at Tesco, added: “Holiday periods can be really tough for Burnham-On-Sea families who miss out on their free school meal provision, meaning it’s hard to make sure kids get healthy, nutritious food. Our pre‑packed donation bags will give a much‑needed boost of food to FareShare, The Felix Project and Trussell, and make a difference to the lives of children and their families over the school holidays.”
The foodbank is encouraging shoppers to support the scheme if they are able to during their regular shop.
