Burnham-On-Sea’s re-elected MP James Heappey has said that Theresa May “blew it” after her decision to call a snap election backfired.

He said the Conservatives’ campaign “very nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory”.

Talking about the nationwide Conservative campaign, he said: “Our campaign lacked a sort of human touch.”

“We weren’t engaging in the debate nationally. When it got to the stage in the last week where our key ‘squeeze message’ was ‘vote for us or it’s Corbyn’, people were saying it wouldn’t be that bad.”

“I think we fought a campaign that managed to very nearly snatch defeat from the jaws of victory,” he told the BBC.

Mr Heappey retained his parliamentary seat with a majority of 7,582 votes over Liberal Democrat Tessa Munt, as reported here.
