Motorists using the M5 through Somerset are being warned to expect long‑term disruption as National Highways begins a major programme of repairs at St Georges Bridge near junction 21 for Weston‑super‑Mare.
The work, which involves strengthening, resurfacing and drainage improvements on the bridge that carries the motorway over the railway line, is set to run late into 2029.
National Highways says the next stage of the project will focus on strengthening and resurfacing the road before teams move on to drainage upgrades in the central reservation.
From the end of September, narrow lanes and hard‑shoulder running will be introduced to allow crews to work safely.
A 50mph speed limit will be in place, supported by CCTV enforcement to help keep traffic moving.
A free vehicle recovery service will also operate to reduce delays if breakdowns occur.
The organisation says a contraflow system will be installed later in the project, with a combination of overnight closures, lane closures and slip road closures required at various points.
The road will usually remain open during the day, and no works will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend from August 28th to 31st.
When closures are needed, signed diversions will be in place, it adds.
There will also be some night-time closures between junction 22 at Burnham‑On‑Sea and junction 21 while the work progresses.
