Burnham-On-Sea’s Threshers wine shop was ‘considerably busier than normal’ on Saturday (December 2nd) as Internet users took advantage of a voucher offer that has exploded over the Web.

Thresher Group, which has stores across the county, fears its pre-Christmas profits could be hit after the supposedly-limited 40 per cent discount voucher, which can be used against wine and champagne, was circulated by email and on the Internet.

The company had emailed the coupon to a limited number of its suppliers last week, but it has quickly spread among the general public.

The Threshers voucherA spokesman at the Burnham branch of Threshers in College Street (pictured above) told Burnham-On-Sea.com on Saturday afternoon it is honouring the vouchers.

“We have been far busier than normal for a Saturday and a lot of people have been coming in with the vouchers to get discounted wine and champagne,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dirk Kind, Thresher Group’s PR manager, said the chain was regretting not ensuring that the coupons made clear the offer was intended for limited use.

“The initial e-mail was to our suppliers and we didn’t say friends and family. It has just absolutely snowballed way beyond anything we anticipated.”

“It has proved to be absolutely huge. We are waiting to see what happens, but we will honour the vouchers.”
