Burnham and Highbridge Town Band has appointed Cllr Michael Clarke as its new president this week.

Michael, who is the currently the towns’ Mayor, said he was “hugely honoured” to be chosen for the role.

“I have always admired the town band’s performances and used to play a double bass myself in my younger years at university so it’s great to be a part of this group,” he said.

Band members formally welcomed him during Wednesday’s rehearsal session where he got to meet some of the 28 band members.

The long-running band, which has 28 members, celebrated its 70th year in 2015 and is currently busily rehearsing for its new season of concerts.

Their opening performance of 2016 will be held on Sunday April 24th at 7.45pm in Burnham-On-Sea’s Princess Theatre. Tickets are on sale now via the box office on 01278 784464.
