A warning has been issued to Burnham-On-Sea dog owners to be extra vigilant after a “savage” attack by an English Bull Terrier left a pet badly injured at the weekend.
The attack took place near St Andrew’s Church on Saturday (March 23rd) when the pet owner was walking her Cocker Spaniel on a lead.
The owner, who we are keeping anonymous, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “My dog was attacked near St Andrew’s Church – the dog was an English Bull Terrier that was running loose in the churchyard.”
“Children were screaming and trying to get away from it. It then raced out of the churchyard into the car park of The Churchlands where it charged at my Cocker Spaniel.”
“It clamped onto her leg and with the three of us, and the owner who eventually turned up, we prised the dog’s jaw off, to free her.”
“The owner was very abusive, and he and a woman with him had to sit on the dog to restrain it.”
She added: “My dog is badly injured, with puncture wounds to the leg. She is very traumatised, as we are. She is also unable to walk at present. Not to mention the expensive vet’s bills.”
“The owner said he was not local and only visiting. He then left, still verbally abusive. We are very concerned that this man and his dog are in the area, which is so very dog friendly, and also that it’s a serious threat to children.”
Sedgemoor’s dog warden is investigating.
