Work begins on new £10,000 upgrade for West Huntspill Model Railway Station

-

Work is underway on a major £10,000 upgrade of West Huntspill Model Railway Station to expand its facilities and attract more visitors.

The team at West Huntspill Model Engineering Society are building a second track for wider gauge trains.

Earthworks are underway this month, as pictured here, ahead of the scheduled opening of the first 200 metres of new track in time for the Society’s annual Santa train rides.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, Chairman Roger Flower from the group explained: “It is a big development for our group – our raised track is for 5 inch and 3.5 inch  gauge trains but several members have larger 7 and a quarter inch rolling stock, which is one of the reasons we are building the new track.”

“A lot of the track is being donated and some very generous donations have come in to help us go ahead with the work.”

“The new track is being created around the outside of our existing track. The work will last several months before it is fully completed. It is an exciting development for us.”

The Society has been running for 53 years and its train rides are popular with families all year-round, opening every Sunday over the summer period. This year’s Santa special trips are already fully booked.
