Burnham-On-Sea went football-crazy on Saturday when England kicked off their first match in the World Cup.

Large crowds of England supporters packed into pubs in the town to watch England beat Paraguay 1-0.

More than 200 fans were glued to a huge TV screen in The Railway, pictured, and the scenes were repeated in pubs across the area.

With everyone’s attention on the big game, Burnham High Street was far quieter than normal for a Saturday afternoon – and several traders closed early to let their staff watch the TV coverage.

Many pubs, cafes and shops have decorated their windows with flags, capes and signs – and this huge inflatable footballer on the front of The Old Pier Tarvern in Pier Street is amusing passers-by. Its landlord was keen to show his support for the England team. Let’s just hope no-one’s hopes are deflated!
