How we use cookies

A cookie is a small file which asks permission to be placed on your computer’s hard drive. Once you agree, the file is added and the cookie helps analyse web traffic or lets you know when you visit a particular site. Cookies allow web applications to respond to you as an individual. The web application can tailor its operations to your needs, likes and dislikes by gathering and remembering information about your preferences.

We use traffic log cookies to identify which pages are being used. This helps us analyse data about webpage traffic and improve our website in order to tailor it to customer needs. We only use this information for statistical analysis purposes and then the data is removed from the system.

Overall, cookies help us provide you with a better website by enabling us to monitor which pages you find useful and which you do not. A cookie in no way gives us access to your computer or any information about you, other than the data you choose to share with us.

You can choose to accept or decline cookies. Most web browsers automatically accept cookies, but you can usually modify your browser setting to decline cookies if you prefer. This may prevent you from taking full advantage of the website.

Webcam on seafront

We have made sure that the web camera has been positioned appropriately, fully zoomed out and set to an appropriate resolution to try and ensure individuals cannot be identified.

All web camera equipment used does not have the facilities or capacity to capture audio.

Should a sensitive situation occur, for example, a medical emergency, within view of one of our web cameras that could compromise someone’s privacy, we shall endeavour to temporarily suspend the live stream as soon as we are made aware of such a situation.

How We Use Video and Still Images Captured

The purpose of the web camera is to promote tourism for the town of Burnham by streaming a live video feed onto this website for general public viewing.

The web camera is not in any way connected, used or affiliated with the police or any local authority and is not used for any surveillance, crime prevention and detection, traffic management or public safety purposes.

Generally, we do not record or store video recordings that have been captured by our web camera. We may, however, from time to time, record and store video recordings of events that are of public interest such as, for example, sunsets, weather conditions, special events, exceptionally high tides and so on. Such video recordings may also be published on this website and our social media pages.

No one may record, store or use any footage captured by our web camera, for any reason, without prior permission.

We accept no liability, responsibility or control for web cameras that are operated and/or owned by external organisations that we provide a link to from this website. External web cameras are also subject to acceptance of their own privacy policies.

Your Rights

In particular, you have the following rights:

  • You can request a copy of any footage where your image is identifiable. We must respond to your request within one month. Bear in mind that not all footage is recorded so we may not hold your images.
  • You can request us to erase any footage that we have of you.
  • You can request that we do not capture any footage of you in future. However, due to the nature of a public web camera, this may make this very difficult and it might not be possible for us to do this.
