    Good evening all,

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year,

To add to what Beccy has said, sadly, the stone structure doesn’t seem a feasible idea. It’s great news that the funding can go towards The Queen’s Garden Party instead.

Regarding trees, I’ve emailed Somerset county highways today and should get a reply in the next 5-10 days.

If the tree planting is a possibility in Queen’s Drive, that’s a plan for Burnham, but nothing permanent for Highbridge. The tree planting and the event at Apex could be enough (Beccy also suggested workshops at The Princess) but this would need to be discussed at a meeting to confirm either way. Are you all available for a Zoom meeting towards the end of this month? Are Wednesdays good for everyone? If so, might I suggest January 19th or 26th at 6.30pm?

Please reply to this email with your availability for either one of those days.

    Many thanks,

    Lily Newton-Browne

Subject: RE: The Queen's Jubilee Working Group meeting

Good afternoon all and Happy New Year.

Just catching up on all of this.

The grant I suggested has released its full criteria. One of the Key Factors being that a community/voluntary group needs to apply for the funding and not the council. The groups Jubilee project must be focused on a creative and cultural activity for public benefit culminating in June 2022 and engages with at least one of the artforms that Arts Council England supports.

Having read the full guidance and the notes from our meeting - the garden or stone does not meet the criteria. However, the event at Apex would, if it was produced either by the friends of the Princess or another group. I will put together a brief budget and ideas for the next time we meet. In terms of the garden etc I suggest the council seek funding through other means although clarity on what sort of stone and size of garden might help understand the cost and time frame – this might be something worth discussing with Friends of Apex.

Look forward to seeing you all soon.

    Best Wishes

    Hi

    Thanks for your note

    Couple of things to mention.

    Funding

Becci did confirm she could possibly raise £10,000 for the celebratory stone

with a balance possibly available from TC funds. (TBC)

70 trees on the Queens Drive I recall we said we'd start with a few?

    a lovely idea in theory-but

I warned that planting trees on a verge would be a traffic hazard especially

when they mature . I believe this is a B road and certainly not wide.

I suggest that The Highways authority be consulted.

Also the verge is easy to maintain by mower and does not restrict visibility .

A series of trees would mean much more maintenance.

    Best Christmas wishes to all

    Mike

  • The Nornen Project
January 27, 2022 The Princess Theatre and Arts Centre, Princess St, Burnham-on-Sea TA8 1EH, UK

On Wednesday 19th January 2022 and Thursday 27th January 2022, join the professional cast and creative team as they research and develop the story of the Nornen into a brand-new play.

Have you seen the shipwreck of the Nornen at Berrow? Do you know the stories? The Nornen Project is bringing the story to life with a series of events and the creation of a brand-new theatrical production, all to celebrate the 125thanniversary of this local landmark in 2022. Come and find out about the successful rescue of the crew (and their dog!) by our very own community and have your say in how our story is told.

Local Producer Corrinne Curtis will create a brand-new theatrical show based on the wrecking of the Nornen in Berrow in 1897. The first phase of the project will see professional theatre makers working with the local community to devise the show from scratch. These locally generated ideas will be worked into a full script, ready for full production.

Corinne says “Come armed with your own stories from the past, a listening ear and an open imaginationTogether we will make an energetic, touching, and playful show for all the family.”

Seed Director Scott O’Hara adds “We tend to feel an ownership over stories that happened in our local area – especially when our ancestors were involved – that makes them our stories. More often than not, however, these stories are told, dramatised without our input. It is very exciting for Seed to provide an opportunity for local people to influence and participate in the telling of this tale and to ensure it is not appropriated. This is a chance to not just see a professional show in the making, but to be a part of shaping the show with your own ideas and local knowledge. Who knows what we’ll create together…” .

There are many ways for people to get involved.

On Wednesday 27th October 10am – 1pm and Thursday 4th November 6pm – 9pm, John Strickland from the history group Capture Burnham will deliver talks about the Nornen followed by an open discussion. Participants will have a chance to share local knowledge and stories and discuss how local history and culture can be reflected in the show.

On Tuesday 23rd November and Friday 10th December, anyone can join workshops on ‘Making Theatre’ where you will get an insight into the skills and techniques involved in creating the bare bones of a play without the pressure of performing.

On Wednesday 19th January 2022 and Thursday 27th January 2022, join the professional cast and creative team as they research and develop the story of the Nornen into a brand-new play.
