A colourful illuminated procession of yachts took place in Burnham-On-Sea on Friday evening (August 27th).

A dozen members of the town’s Sailing Club took to the sea in a flotilla of boats decorated with electric lights.

They set sail from the Yacht Club at around 9.20pm and the boats were lit up earlier than planned between 9.30pm and 9.55pm.

A number of spectators lined the seafront to view the spectacle, which was last held two years ago due to bad weather cancelling it during 2009.

Ken Sowden, Commodore of Burnham-On-Sea Sailing Club, told Burnham-On-Sea.com after Friday’s event: “The procession went really well and we’re delighted with the number of decorated yachts that took part.”

“The light-up did go ahead slightly earlier than scheduled due to higher than expected winds. We apologise if anyone missed the event as a result.”

This year’s event was held in honour of the club’s long-standing president, Tony Winterburn, pictured below, who is stepping down next year.

“Tony watched the procession from a motorboat anchored off the pier, where he took the salute from members as they sailed past,” said Ken.
