Huge waves give Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront a hammering

-

Huge waves gave Burnham-On-Sea’s seafront a hammering this morning (Wednesday, March 31st) after strong gales swept in at the same time as one of the highest tides of the year.

These were the scenes next to the Tourist Information Centre on The Esplanade when the 11.9 metre tide reached its peak just after 8am.

Huge spumes of spray were swept over the seafront in many places – although this walker seemed undaunted by the conditions.

Jim Bowers, from Cheltenham, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We don’t get mornings like this very often and I had just had to get out and experience it. I had planned to do some fishing!”

The Environment Agency again closed the town’s flood gates at the top of the jetty, at the Sailing Club, and at Maddock’s Slade as a precaution.
