Burnham’s MP and Mayor back ‘shop local’ Christmas campaign

-

Residents in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been urged to shop local and support local traders this Christmas.

Burnham’s Mayor Ken Smout and MP Tessa Munt were joined by representatives from The Federation of Small Business for a tour of the town centre to see the wide range of gifts and products on sale.

“The fact is that local High Streets are struggling, and yet the retailers we have seen in Burnham are testament to those who can survive provided that they target the right market, and provide a good service,” said John Mayer of The Federation of Small Business during the visit.

“I think Material Needs itself is a great example of a well-managed retail outlet, with excellent friendly staff. As soon as you walk in you feel welcomed, and in a great atmosphere and, as an ex-retailer, I was very impressed.”

Tessa added that she is happy to add her support to the scheme, saying that Burnham offers “a wonderful range of shops with something for everyone.”

The campaign was welcomed by Burnham’s Chamber of Trade, which launched a separate ‘shop local’ campaign last month accompanied by an ongoing shop crawl competition.
