Plans for new shop and three homes unveiled for Berrow Inn site

New plans to build a convenience store and three homes have been unveiled for the site of a former pub in Berrow.

A firm called Novellus LLP has formally submitted a planning application to convert the Berrow Inn site into a retail unit and homes.

The scheme – which was first unveiled last year – will see a four-bed detached home and two three-bed semi detached properties built with 12 parking spaces alongside the shop.

“Our application proposes the erection of a 354m2 retail unit on the east side of site with associated car parking and access from Berrow Road,” says the applicant.”

“The proposed retail unit will provide jobs to local people, a convenient facility to serve the day-to-day needs of local people, and reduce the need for people to travel out of the area.”

“The proposed building will be set back from the highway by over 10m to allow 7 car parking spaces to be accommodated in front of the store including one disabled space.”

“The proposal will bring forward a redundant piece of land into viable use which will contribute towards local housing needs in Burnham-On-Sea and provide a shop that will provide jobs.”

Comments on the application – which has a reference number of 05/15/00014 – are being welcomed from residents and interested parties by Sedgemoor District Council until September 11th when the application will be considered for approval.

The Berrow Inn was demolished in May 2014, as we reported here, following months of uncertainty about the future of the pub.

Villagers have given varied feedback on the latest scheme, with some saying it will be a useful facility while others are concerned it is out of keeping with the area.

Berrow Parish Council Chairman Barry Kew previously told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We have seen a wide range of opinions expressed, most of which have been positive about the development.”
