Burnham-On-Sea Bowling Club welcomed the town’s Mayor to formally launch their new outdoor bowls season on Wednesday (April 16th).
Mayor Sharon Perry rolled the first shot across the green on the opening day of the season alongside Town Crier Alastair Murray.
She said: “To get the bowling green looking so great has taken lots of hard work during the winter months. I congratulate the club’s volunteers for their efforts to achieve this and wish the club well in its matches and competitions this season.”
Jim Bass, the club’s committee member, said: “It was fantastic to have the Mayor along – she really enjoyed the visit and it was a pleasure to talk about the club and its activities.”
“They also took part in a game known as the ‘spider’ where the players have one foot in the ditch besides the green and one on the green, with a single jack in the middle. On the sound of the bell all bowlers bowl their wood at the same time and the closest to the jack wins a prize. It’s a nice way to start the season.”
The club in St Andrew’s Road will be holding its open day on Sunday May 25th from 10am-4pm when all will be welcome to come and try out the sport.
The long-running club, which has 110 members, was launched in 1906.
