Fresh safety calls after two-car accident on Berrow’s Coast Road

-

Fresh calls for safety improvements along Berrow’s Coast Road have been made today (Monday) following a two vehicle accident this morning.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Coast Road at 7.30am after a green VW Golf ended up on its roof in a roadside ditch when it was involved in a collision with a red Renault, as pictured here.

One person was treated by paramedics at the scene and another was taken by ambulance to Weston General Hospital, although the injuries were not serious.

Berrow Speedwatch organiser Andrea Johnson told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I did see the aftermath of the crash and was shocked to see a car on its side in the ditch. It does highlight once again the safety concerns we have along this stretch of road. If a pedestrian had been walking by at the time it could have very serious.”

And June Hill, who is another of the Berrow speedwatch members, added: “The dangerous speed of traffic along this stretch is a big issue – just this afternoon we conducted a speedwatch and in the space of an hour we caught 20 people exceeding the limit, one of whom was travelling at 51mph. A pavement would make it so much safer for pedestrians.”

Campaigners have long campaigned for Somerset County Council to introduce a pavement along the busy stretch of road, arguing that fast-moving traffic poses a risk to pedestrians.
