The Job Centre Plus premises in the High Street has shut down as part of a cost-cutting “modernisation programme” by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP).

Burnham-On-Sea.com reported earlier this year how Somerset County Council had voiced its opposition to the closure, joining town and district councillors.

Jill Shortland, leader of the County Council, said: “Somerset County Council is extremely disappointed about the Government’s decision to close this important Job Centre Plus office.”

“It demonstrates a lack of understanding of the economic and social realities of life in Somerset and is misconceived financially. Any savings must be offset against additional costs to the public purse and some of our most vulnerable members of society from lost employment opportunities.”

Burnham-On-Sea job seekers now have to use online services or travel to Bridgwater or Weston to get information about vacancies.
