Burnham-On-Sea firefighters have saved the life of a jogger who suffered a cardiac arrest while running near Highbridge.

Two off-duty firefighters were driving along Huntspill Road on Thursday afternoon when they saw the jogger fall to the ground.

They immediately put their first aid training to practical use by giving the man CPR and, even though the man’s heart stopped, they managed to successfully revive him.

Burnham firefighter Dick Solomon told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The two gave vital first aid and massaged his heart before calling an ambulance.”

“Fortunately, Burnham’s fire crew was also passing at the time, returning from flood work on the Somerset Levels, and we were also able to help resuscitate him. It was excellent timing for him.”

“Shortly afterwards, the ambulance arrived and they put him on a defibrillator and took him to hospital where he is recovering.”

“It was incredibly fortunate that it all occurred while our crews were in the area and were able to give him immediate help.”

The jogger, who lives locally and is in his mid-30s, was taken to Musgrove Hospital in Taunton.
