Crime-fighting number plate camera set to be switched on in Brean

-

A high-tech vehicle number plate recognition camera that will help police identify criminals in just seconds is set to be switched on in Brean over the next few weeks.

Burnham-On-Sea.com was first to report in January that roadside number plate cameras were to be introduced in Burnham-On-Sea, Brean and Highbridge in a bid to crackdown on travelling criminals and tackle vehicle crime.

The first of the revolutionary cameras has been installed in Church Road, Brean – as pictured here – and is ready to be switched on over the coming weeks.

Sergeant Ian Kennett of Burnham police told Burnham-On-Sea.com the new cameras could have a “major impact” in helping officers target travelling criminals.

He added: “Some final work on the Brean camera is due to be carried out shortly to connect it to power and communicatons supplies and we hope to switch it on soon.”

A camera in Burnham-On-Sea is also being progressed as part of a larger contract and negotiations on this are currently underway, he added.
