Megan celebrates success
YOUNG Burnham-On-Sea tennis player Megan Rundle has plenty of reasons to celebrate. Megan, who plays at Burnham's Avenue Tennis Club, has had a successful month, winning several Mini Red (Under 8, Grade 3) trophies and medals and claiming tournament victories too.
Stert Island Swim tomorrow
EIGHTY swimmers will dash into the sea at the start of Burnham-On-Sea's annual Stert Island Swim tomorrow (Sunday, September 4th). The unique 2,400m race will this year start earlier than normal at 11.30am, watched by crowds of onlookers along the seafront.

MP joins wind farm protest
BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP joined dozens of campaigners on Saturday (September 3rd) who are fighting plans for a controversial wind farm near the town. Tessa Munt met over 80 members of the No Pilrow campaign, which is opposing proposals by Broadview Energy to build six 140 metre turbines on farmland at Pilrow, approximately one kilometre south of Rooksbridge.

CROWDS of music lovers will flock to Burnham-On-Sea today (Saturday, September 3rd) when dozens of musicians and performers will be in action across the town. Burnham's sixth year FolkFest will be in full swing throughout the day as more than 70 musical acts and dance groups perform at seven venues.
Free fireworks display tonight
THE skies above Brean will be lit up with fireworks tonight (Saturday, September 3rd) when Brean Leisure Park holds a free end-of-season display. While there will be no admittance charge, there will be collections on the night for local Burnham charities and good causes.

HOLIDAYMAKERS in Brean got in a festive mood to raise hundreds of pounds for Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercraft charity BARB this week with a summer display of Christmas lights! Caravans and tents at Diamond Farm Holiday Park were decorated with festive displays of tinsel and snowmen.
Chip pan causes town blaze
BURNHAM-On-Sea's fire crews were called to a blaze at a Highbridge home early today (Saturday) which was caused by an unattended chip pan. Crews from Burnham and Bridgwater rushed to Sparks Way at 1.43am where the property had been evacuated of occupants.
Tesco delays town store expansion
Exclusive: TESCO has this week delivered a blow to Burnham's regeneration project by saying it will not be proceeding with the multi-million pound expansion of its Burnham-On-Sea store for at least another year. The supermarket giant says it is 'still committed' to expanding its store.
FolkFest is off to a great start
BURNHAM-On-Sea's sixth annual FolkFest got off to a great start last night and continues this evening (Friday, September 2nd) with a special concert featuring a top line-up. The popular folk festival opened on Thursday evening at the Ritz Social Club with French-themed music act Sur Les Docks.
Skittles team reaches finals
A HIGHBRIDGE pub's skittles team is celebrating making the finals of a regional tournament. The Royalists, who are based at The Bristol Bridge Inn on the A38, will be travelling to Torquay to compete in the Blackthorn Skittles British Championships during October.
Mystery goo is 'harmless algae'
Exclusive: THE Environment Agency has reassured beach users in Burnham-On-Sea that this brown gloopy substance being washed up along the town's tideline this week is "a perfectly harmless algae." Its statement comes amid concerns from beach users that the unsightly substance could be toxic.
Darren celebrates 25th year!
A FAMILIAR face behind the til of a Burnham-On-Sea hardware shop has this week clocked up a quarter of a century working at the store. A surprise ceremony was held on Thursday (September 1st) for Darren Gibbons, who has worked 25 year at Home Hardware.
FolkFest starts this evening!
BURNHAM-On-Sea's sixth annual FolkFest gets underway today (Thursday) with an opening gig. Lively group Sur Les Docks plus local support will be playing at the Ritz Social Club in Victoria Street. The concert will get underway at 8pm, with entrance at £4 per person.

NATIONAL inspectors have this week praised standards for patients at Burnham-On-Sea's War Memorial Hospital. Every year, the Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) publishes comparative information showing the standards across a range of patient services.
10m town sign wins approval
Exclusive: A 10-metre wide sign displaying the word 'Highbridge' is to be introduced next to the town's clock. Burnham and Highbridge Town Council's application to introduce the new sign in Jubilee Gardens next to the A38 has this week been granted approval.

CHILDREN were able to experience walking on water when the unusual activity of water zorbing came to a garden centre near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend. Sanders Garden World had several giant bubbles, filled with air, which youngsters were able to climb into.

CROWDS of model train enthusiasts from across the UK gathered in Burnham-On-Sea over the Bank Holiday weekend for a popular two-day exhibition. The annual Sedgemoor Rail event, run by Burnham and District Model Railway Club, was held on August 27th and 28th.

BURNHAM-On-Sea's long-running Pubwatch group is linking up with schemes in Bridgwater and Taunton. The Burnham group - which represents 14 pubs and clubs - has amalgamated with the two other towns to strengthen its operation. Burnham Pubwatch has been running for over 11 years.
Idyllic Burnham rivals Med!
CALM weather combined with one of the highest tides of the year generated idyllic scenes in Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday evening (August 30th). The 11.79m high tide at 8.43pm was among the six highest tides of 2011, sweeping beaches clean of litter and touching the foot of the dunes at Berrow.

CONCERNS for a man spotted walking half a mile from the shore across mudflats prompted a call-out for a team of Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards on Tuesday evening (August 30th). Five Burnham Coastguards were called to back up Weston Coastguards.
Four arrests at harvest home
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea police have arrested four people after trouble flared up at the end of the East Brent Harvest Home at the weekend. Officers were called to the village by on-site security staff at 11pm on Friday amid reports of fighting and disorder.
FolkFest countdown underway

Art plans for new hotel screening
Exclusive: A community group is being sought to decorate the new screening that has been installed over the past week at the front of the fire-ravaged Highbridge Hotel. MP: 'Bury power lines underground'

Crews rescue three in trapped car
FIRE crews removed the roof of a car to rescue three people trapped inside following an accident in East Brent earlier today (Monday, August 29th). Emergency services were called to the A38 at 2.50am after the car left the road, ending up in a roadside ditch.

Man jailed over rape charges
A former East Huntspill man has been given a life jail term following the rape and indecent assault of two young girls. Vaughn Glynn, 48, has been convicted of nine counts of rape, four charges of sexual assault and two counts of making indecent images of children.

Bridge jumper prompts concern
BURNHAM-On-Sea Coastguards were called to Bridgwater this evening (Saturday, August 27th) to assist police with an incident in which a man had jumped from a tall bridge into the River Parrett. A team of four Coastguards was called to the roadway over the river in Western Way at 6.10pm.
Convoy thunders through town
Photos and Video: DOZENS of classic American hot rods, trucks and classic vehicles thundered through Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge on Saturday (August 27th) during a mass convoy for charity. Over 50 vehicles from the Blue Ridge Runners set off from the Oaktree Arena along the A38 and then drove in procession to Burnham via the A38 and Marine Drive.
New homes plan gets backing
Exclusive: PROPOSALS to build a new developent of nine new homes in Burnham-On-Sea have this week been given a thumbs-up by the Town Council. An application for outline planning permission for nine dwellings on land to the rear of 24 Golf Links Road was considered by members of the Town Council's Planning Applications Committee.

Fresh warning after 4x4 rescue
A FRESH warning has been issued to motorists driving on beaches in the Burnham-On-Sea area after this stranded 4x4 had to be towed to safety at Berrow on Thursday (August 25th). Beach wardens called on the help of Burnham-based rescue charity BARB after a holidaymaker's Land Rover became stranded.

GCSE students at Highbridge's King Alfred School were celebrating on Thursday morning (August 25th) after achieving a fantastic set of results. 68% of students managed to achieve the headline figure of 5 or more GCSE grades at C grade or above including English and Maths.
