£2.5m health campus on track
Exclusive: WORK to construct a new multi-million pound health campus in Berrow is progressing well and is on track to be completed next Spring. The structure of the £2.5million health campus in Brent Road has started to take shape in recent weeks, as pictured above. The project is being jointly funded by Burnham Medical Centre and NHS Somerset.

A rock group based in the Burnham-On-Sea area has won national acclaim on BBC Radio 2 this week. Men In Spex won Patrick Kielty's Last Chance Saloon competition on BBC Radio 2 with their original song 'Say What You Want'. The group includes Neil Richards from East Brent and Nick Grimsley from Brean.
Motorcyclist hurt in M5 accident
A woman suffered facial injuries after being hurt in a motorbike accident next to Burnham-On-Sea's motorway junction on Wednesday evening (September 29th). The southbound entry road onto the M5 was closed for more than an hour while emergency services were at the scene.
Tourist centre's future to be decided
Exclusive: The future of Burnham-On-Sea's closure-threatened Tourist Information Centre is to be decided over the next fortnight. Several proposals for the centre, situated on The Esplanade, will be discussed when Sedgemoor District Council's Executive meets on Wednesday October 13th.

New Berrow protest announced
ANGRY campaigners in Berrow who are calling for a new pavement to be introduced along a dangerous stretch of road in the village will once again pick up their placards to hold another protest march in October. Berrow's Local Action Team is organising the protest on Saturday 23rd October, starting at 11am from outside Berrow Church.
Hotel fire visible across area
THESE were the dramatic scenes visible from Brean Down on Wednesday evening (September 29th) as fire crews tackled a huge blaze at a hotel in Weston-super-Mare. More than 30 firefighters were called to the Royal Pier Hotel, which is not in use, in Birnbeck Road just before 6pm.
Man 'had 1,300 indecent photos'
A Burnham-On-Sea man who admitted downloading more than 1,300 indecent images of children has this week been given a six-month suspended sentence. Francis Hutchinson, 51, said it was right he had been caught and added that being arrested felt like "a weight lifted off his shoulders".
Motorist in congestion zone battle
Exclusive: A BURNHAM-On-Sea motorist has been locked in seven months of legal negotiations after receiving a penalty charge for driving through London's congestion zone. Frances Deeley, pictured, drove her Honda Civic into the centre of London after dropping her son off at Heathrow airport last February, setting off the long-running wrangle.
Drugs seized in police raids
THOUSANDS of pounds worth of canabis has been seized by police in raids in Highbridge over the past week. Officers swooped on the property at Highbridge Quay where a large quantity of drugs and money was seized. In the first, a 37 year old female was warned for possession of cannabis after a warrant was executed on the Morland estate.
Revised flats scheme opposed
Exclusive: NEW proposals to turn this property in the centre of Highbridge into a new development of 14 flats have been met with opposition from town councillors this week. On Monday night (September 27th), town councillors considered a revised planning application for the redevelopment of Canal House, which is situated in a prominent location.
Hinkley consultation set to end
EDF Energy has this week urged people in the Burnham-On-Sea area to make their voices heard on plans to expand Hinkley Point - as its second phase of consultation ends. After more than 12 weeks of exhibitions, public meetings, online engagement and correspondence, the latest stage of consultation will close on Monday 4th October.
TV star visits Brent Knoll
GARDEN designer and TV personality Diarmuid Gavin was in Brent Knoll to share his green-fingered tips and help promote the launch of a new car. Diarmuid, who has presented and appeared in shows as varied as Homefront and Chelsea Flower Show, attended the event at Sanders Garden World to launch the new Nissan Micra.
Kung Fu group high-kicks rivals!
HIGH-kicking members of Berrow-based Kung Fu group Fei Lung Kwan won 11 of the 12 awards on offer at the National Junior Championships at the weekend. The martial arts group travelled to Middlesex where they won first and third in the 5-7 age group; the top three places in the 8-10 age category, and the same spots in the 11-15 group.
Fire crews tackle town blaze
A faulty washing machine is being blamed for causing a fire in Burnham-On-Sea this morning (Monday, September 27th). Two fire engines from Burnham were sent to Monks Way, as pictured here, at 10.16am after spoke was seen issuing from a bungalow. On their arrival, the crews confirmed the incident had been caused by a washing machine on fire.
School in evacuation drama
A HISTORY lesson came alive for dozens of schoolchildren when they re-enacted a wartime evacuation in Highbridge this week. Ninety children from Walliscote Primary near Weston travelled by train to Highbridge Railway Station dressed in wartime costumes, holding their ration packs. During the trip, they visited Highbridge's historic Frank Foley statue.
Lifeboat crew in helicopter drill
A group of Burnham-On-Sea lifeboat crewmembers has completed a day's training with the RAF rescue helicopter. Burnham RNLI was invited to train for a day with the RAF Chivenor crew at its base in Devon, which they undertook last Thursday. The crew were kitted up with RAF flying suits.
Coin collector thanked by RNLI
A fundraiser who has collected hundreds of pounds worth of five pence coins for Burnham-On-Sea RNLI has been presented with a photo of the lifeboats as a thank you. Ron Bowling and his wife Freda from Lancashire have been regular holiday visitors to Burnham for many years.
Martin competes in GB team
A Burnham-On-Sea athlete competed in the Great Britain team at the World Duathlon Championships this week. Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported in May how Martin Rogers, who works at Burnham Swim and Sports Academy, was selected to represent the country at the event in Edinburgh.
Calling all young video makers!
Police are challenging up-and-coming young directors, screenwriters and actors in the Burnham-On-Sea area to tackle binge drinking and alcohol related crime in a short film competition. The competition has been launched by Avon and Somerset Police as part of their 'Relentless on Keeping you Safe' campaign.
Tattoo fundraiser makes his mark
A FORMER Burnham-On-Sea soldier has raised hundreds of pounds for Help For Heroes by having the charity's logo tattooed onto his back. David Keatley held the sponsored tattoo at Burnham's Inked Images tattoo shop in College Street on Saturday (September 25th). Over £500 had been raised by Saturday morning, with further funding promised from generous sponsors.
Council to publish framework
Sedgemoor District Council will this week publish its blueprint for the Burnham-On-Sea area for the next 16 years - and is inviting public feedback on the proposals. The Submission Core Strategy is a key component of the Local Development Framework that sets out the policies which will guide development in our area up until 2026.
Two killed in M5 car fire
Two people died in a car fire on the M5 between Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge on Friday night (September 24th). Police have appealed for witnesses after a man and woman who were travelling southbound in a white Citroen BX were killed close to junction 23. The car ended up on the hard shoulder on fire and caused long queues of traffic in the area.
Class of 1982 ready for reunion
If you are a former pupil of Highbridge's King Alfred School who left in the summer of 1982, then an evening of reminiscing and memories is on offer. A reunion is being organised for Saturday 9th October in the old school hall from 7.30pm-midnight when a bar, 1980s disco and refreshments will be laid on.
Teenager jailed for sex offences
A 19-year-old man from Highbridge has been jailed for sex offences against a teenage girl. Benjamin Dewhirst, 19, of Burnham Road, pleaded guilty to two offences of rape, a sexual assault and two assaults causing actual bodily harm. Judge Graham Hume Jones sentenced him following a case at Taunton Crown Court.
Burnham group helps tots fund
MEMBERS of Burnham-On-Sea's Inner Wheel Club have this week presented a cheque for more than £1,500 to an appeal fund that provides intensive care cots for young children. The group's Immediate Past President, Sandra Squire, accompanied by President Janet Breed, Sue Newbery and Sandra Moon visited St Michael's Hospital in Bristol.
Raising a cuppa for charity
HUNDREDS of pounds was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support on Friday (September 24th) when residents across the Burnham-On-Sea area took part in the World's Biggest Coffee Morning. Burnham's Mayor, Michael Clarke attended one event at Apex Park in Highbridge and others were held at Sanders Garden World in Brent Knoll and at Berrow.

A FAN of ITV's X-Factor has stunned staff at this Highbridge bookmakers shop by putting a £1,000 bet on a twice-failed contestant to win the show. The anonymous punter placed his wager at the town's William Hill branch in Market Street. With odds of 20/1, the man stands to win a huge £20,000 if Marlon McKenzie can win.
DNA sea survey started
SCIENTISTS are completing Somerset's first ever comprehensive study of DNA extracted from water samples in an attempt to further improve bathing water quality in the Bristol Channel. Wessex Water is leading a project to complete microbial source tracking (MST) in Burnham-On-Sea plus Weston and other coastal towns.
Child rollerbladed on railway line
A photographer has caught on camera the moment that a reckless youngster rollerbladed along a railway line moments before a train thundered through Highbridge Railway Station. The boy was spotted jumping off a platform with a pal to perform the stunt, which was first mentioned on Burnham-On-Sea's discussion forums here last weekend.
Shock over rescued swan's injuries
THIS was the disturbing image that met a rescue boat crew from Burnham-On-Sea this week when they helped wildlife carers reach an injured swan. BARB's rescue boat was called to Westhay, near Shapwick, to help Secret World's carers reach the distressed bird, which had swallowed a fishing line.
Centre's aid for operatic society
STAFF at Sanders Garden World near Burnham-On-Sea have this week come to the rescue of a musical being staged at The Playhouse Theatre in Weston-super-Mare. BURNHAM-On-Sea's MP this week threatened to resign her role as a parliamentary whip over the replacement of Trident when she spoke at the Liberal Democrats party conference. Tessa Munt made the comments on Wednesday (September 22nd) when the party's annual conference considered the question of whether to renew the nuclear deterrent.
New boost for Civic Pride plans
A 210,000 project to partially pedestrianise Burnham-On-Sea's High Street received a further boost on Wednesday (September 22nd) when district council bosses gave a thumbs-up to the scheme. Sedgemoor District Council's Executive unanimously agreed that over 158,000 of funding can be spent on creating a new pedestrian-only zone.

ANDY Holt, Burnham-On-Sea Swim and Sports Academy's Head Swimming Teacher, has this week been named the best 'Learn to swim teacher in the South West of England'. The ASA - the English national governing body for swimming - announced the decision at its annual awards gala.
Floral 'extravaganza' opens in town
COLOURFUL artwork with a 'floral extravaganza' theme has gone on show at a new exhibition in Burnham-On-Sea. Ten artists are taking part in the event being held at Sea Breeze gallery in Victoria Street throughout this month. The floral theme includes paintings in a variety of media ranging from watercolours and pastels to oils and acrylics.

BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge's Mayor and Mayoress have this week congratulated the two towns' volunteers for scooping awards in the Britain In Bloom competition. Cllr Michael Clarke and his wife, Mayoress Maria Clarke, met the victorious groups to pass on their thanks after both towns achieved Silver Gilt awards.
Local artists open studios
ARTISTS across the Burnham-On-Sea area will be opening their studios to the public this month for the annual Somerset Arts Weeks. The event runs from September 18th to October 3rd and will see over a dozen local artists displaying their works across the Burnham area.
Boat aground on Stert Island
Coastguards called out Burnham-On-Sea's rescue hovercrafts on Monday morning (20th September) to check on the welfare of a man onboard a boat that had run aground on Stert Island. BARB's Light Of Elizabeth flew two Coastguard crewmembers out onto the island at 11.30am to check that the man, who was aged in his late 70s, was safe.
Classic car in wedding day drama
Exclusive: The driver of this 1928 classic vehicle was lucky to escape with only bumps and scratches after it plunged off the road near Burnham-On-Sea at the weekend. Emergency services from Burnham rushed to The Causeway between East Huntspill and Woolavington after the driver lost control of the 1928 Packard on Saturday.
Youth club appeals for leaders
HIGHBRIDGE Community Youth Club has this week issued an appeal for new leaders to come forward to avoid it having to turn away youngsters. The long-running club, which is based at Morland Youth Hall, requires leaders aged 16 and above to help at its weekly Tuesday sessions.
£1,000 raised at Memory Walk
DOZENS of supporters of The Alzheimer's Society pulled on their walking boots to take part in an annual sponsored walk in Brean on Sunday afternoon (19th September). Almost 50 people took part in the Memory Walk, which started from Brean Leisure Park, and offered two routes.
Bird release drama on Brean Down
VOLUNTEERS from Burnham-On-Sea rescue charity BARB were on hand to help wildlife carers after the release of a sea bird didn't go to plan on the top of Brean Down on Saturday afternoon (September 18th). An injured Manx Shearwater that had been nursed back to health over several weeks by East Huntspill's Secret World was released.
Teenager killed in crash is named
A 19 year-old man died in a fireball horror near Burnham-On-Sea on Saturday (September 18th) has been named. Billy Davis died after his BMW car burst into flames after crashing into a telegraph pole and leaving the road on the A370 Bridgwater Road in East Brent. Two teenage passengers who were also in the vehicle scrambled free.
Stolen motorbike recovered
A STOLEN motorbike found dumped on Brean beach on Saturday (September 18th) has been returned to its owner. The village's beach warden, Dave Furber, alerted police after spotting the bike dumped in soft sand on the beach close to Brean Down, as pictured here.
Penny Farthing rides again!
PUPILS at St Joseph's school in Burnham-On-Sea received a history lesson with a difference on Friday (September 17th). Cycling enthusiast Andy Brewer visited the school's Year 5 children with a replica Penny Farthing bicycle wearing period costume.
