Archers on target at local event
ARCHERS from across Britain gathered at Mark College, near Burnham-On-Sea, on Saturday (August 1st) to compete in a longbow tournament. Hosted by the Coastal Archers, the tournament was a two-way western event, involving the release of 96 arrows by each of the 34 competitors over distances of 60 and 80 yards.

A COLOURFUL drawing of buildings on Burnham's Esplanade has been judged the winner of a competition to sketch scenes around the town. Bill Edwards was awarded first place in the 'Draw Burnham-On-Sea Day' competition, held on Saturday (August 1st) during the River Brue Arts Festival.

Teenager rescued from Brean Down
A TEENAGE boy has been rescued by a Coastguard helicopter after getting stuck on the steep cliffs of Brean Down on Friday evening (July 31st). The 15-year-old boy was airlifted to safety from the south-facing cliffs near Brean Cove after becoming stranded while attempting to climb up from the beach.

A 30 year-old man has been arrested by police in Highbridge after a fight involving a knife. Three teams of police officers and an ambulance crew were called to Market Street on Thursday evening (July 30th) after reports of an altercation. Police were called to Market Street, opposite the One Stop Shop, at 7.45pm.

A housing developer has this week been given permission to build 48 new homes in Burnham-On-Sea. Swindon-based Bloor Homes had applied to construct the properties on land off Thorndike Way and Cookson Close. The development covers one, two and three bed "affordable" homes.

Residents of Isleport Lane say speed limits should be cut along neighbouring Mark Road and a fence that "severely hampers the visibility of motorists" should be cut back.

THE body of this dead porpoise was washed up on Burnham-On-Sea Beach on Monday morning (July 27th) - the second such discovery in as many years. Sedgemoor District Council collected the carcass, pictured here, after a resident near Maddock's Slade spotted it and alerted the council.

Wendy Bishop, Catering Manager at St Andrew’s Junior School in Burnham, has been awarded a Gold award for her Decorated Celebration Cake in the 'Finishing Touches' competition, organised by LACA, the Local Authority Caterers Association.

FIRE crews from across Somerset were called to Brean Leisure Park on Friday (July 24th) after four people became trapped on a huge fairground ride. The Fire Service was called to help four youngsters stuck on 'Extreme', a high-level fairground ride at the park. They were evntually lowered to safety with the help of the fire crews.

JUDGES from the Britain In Bloom competition visited Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday (July 21st) and were impressed with the colourful floral displays on show across the town. The two judges were met by Burnham Mayor Derick Cooper and Burnham In Bloom organisers Richard Young and Dave Perrett.
JUDGES from the Britain In Bloom competition visited Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday (July 21st) and were impressed with the colourful floral displays on show across the town. The two judges were met by Burnham Mayor Derick Cooper and Burnham In Bloom organisers Richard Young and Dave Perrett.

Regeneration group 'mothballed'
Exclusive: BURNHAM-On-Sea and Highbridge's Regeneration Partnership is being 'mothballed' due to a lack of funding, we can reveal. The group is being disbanded and its Chairperson, former County Councillor Rosemarie Parsons, has confirmed she will step down in September without a replacement being appointed.

Wildlife in spotlight at Berrow
GUIDED wildlife walks were one of the activities on offer during a special Dunes Discovery Day at Berrow on Saturday (July 18th). Pond dipping, a wildlife quiz and plant hunting were enjoyed by visitors to Berrow Nature Reserve. Somerset Moth Group's Bill Irwin was among the experts at the event.

Serious crash causes M5 delays
THIS multi-vehicle accident caused delays for motorists on the M5 motorway near Burnham-On-Sea on Tuesday (July 21st). A lorry collided with a Highways Agency vehicle on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway near to junction 23. Police officers, fire crews and ambulances were called to the scene at 11.30am.
