Traffic on M5 at Burnham reduced to a crawl after multiple accidents

-

Traffic on the M5 motorway at Burnham-On-Sea was brought to a standstill on Thursday morning (February 1st) following a series of accidents.

A car crashed into the central reservation half a mile south of Sedgemoor Services on the northbound carriageway at 6.50am, closing the outside lane and leading to several follow-on incidents.

Police spokesman Darren Bane told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The Highways Agency was quickly on the scene, but other vehicles on the motorway couldn’t slow down in time and several follow-on shunts occurred.”

“A total of two cars went into the central reservation and three others were on the hard shoulder.”

The accidents caused disruption to early morning commuters, and led to long tailbacks for Burnham residents leaving the town via Edithmead.

Mr Bane added that it was unclear what had caused the initial crash.
