The fire service has completed its investigation into a serious blaze in Burnham-On-Sea on Wednesday evening (April 30th) which spread to two houses.
Crews from across Somerset were called to Priestley Way in Burnham at 5.55pm after thick black smoke was seen billowing out of one home and affecting a house next door.
“Multiple calls were received to a fire in the garden, and appliances were mobilised,” says a spokesman. “The incident escalated rapidly and reports were received that the property was involved in fire.”
“Six fire appliances, plus a water bowser from Bridgwater and an aerial ladder platform from Taunton were mobilised, along with the incident command unit from Street and the incident support unit from Martock.”
Within minutes, the fire quickly spread and flames were seen emerging out of the roof of the building with the interior fully alight.
Crews got the fire under control using 4 breathing apparatus, 3 attack jets, 2 hose reel jets and a thermal imaging camera.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said the fire also spread to a neighbouring property as well, causing smoke damage.
Burnham-On-Sea Police set up a cordon in the road, with the help of volunteers, to enable access for the emergency services. It was confirmed there had been no injuries.
A fire spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com that the cause of the incident has been confirmed as accidental.
By 5am on Thursday (May 1st), the incident was scaled down to a single fire appliance after crews damped down hot spots overnight. The incident was closed at 8am.
Nearby residents have expressed shock at the incident. One said: “It was frightening to see how quickly it spread from being a small fire in the garden to taking over the whole house in a few short minutes. We’re incredibly relieved that no-one was hurt.”
