New-look Berrow bus shelter unveiled by council after crash

-

A new-look bus shelter in Berrow that puts Banksy to shame has been formally opened this week, almost a year after it was partly demolished in an accident.

Burnham-On-Sea.com first reported last year how a car had ploughed into the building in Coast Road, as pictured on the right.

Berrow Parish Council successfully submitted an insurance claim and then gave village artist Malcolm Dormer the task of decorating it in an eye-catching way.

Parish councillor Carol Dyer told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “Malcolm certainly rose to the challenge and has done a great job in giving the shelter a local safari theme, complete with giraffes!”

She added: “We like to make our bus stops a feature for the many thousands of holidaymakers who pass here every year. We get many positive comments from residents and visitors.”

Malcolm, who is a well-known local artist, added: “Decorating this building was wonderful fun. I tried to make the design as surreal as possible and decided on a ‘Giraffic Park’ theme. The whole job took about a week.”

Carol added that the tradition of painting its shelters started several years ago when an art student asked the council for permission to decorate one.
